If I paint a cityscape I usually add a few people or "people shapes" to add scale or tell a story. In a sea or riverscape I use boats to add the narrative. Immediately you can identify a working or leisure activity, a sense of timescale, location or wealth without looking at the water.

After growing up by the sea and gravitating to the water whenever I travel it's often the boats in a contry or city that attract me; gondolas, long tail boats, fishing boats or yachts, I love them all
